The Bone Crier's Moon duology by Kathryn Purdie delivers a captivating premise grounded in original mythology. The idea of Bone Criers — women bound by sacred magic to guide souls to the afterlife — is both haunting and beautiful, and the world-building around their rituals, beliefs, and legacy is one of the series' strongest elements.

Purdie's writing is atmospheric, drawing readers into a world where duty and destiny collide with personal desire. The relationships (particularly the bonds of friendship and loyalty) have some touching moments, and there's genuine emotional depth in how the characters grapple with sacrifice and trust.

However, the series doesn't fully live up to its potential. The pacing can drag, especially in the second book, and while the foundation is strong, some character arcs feel underdeveloped.
