How to Start a Book Club at Home (That People Actually Turn Up To)

Most book clubs die in month three. Not because the books were bad, but because nobody decided the boring things in advance.

Decide these five things first

1. Size. Six to eight people. Fewer and one cancellation kills the night. More and the quiet readers never speak.
2. Frequency. Monthly. Fortnightly sounds keen and becomes homework.
3. A fixed date. "First Thursday" beats "we''ll find a date" every single time.
4. Who picks. Rotate. Whoever hosts picks the next book. No committee.
5. Page limit. Agree a maximum, say 400 pages. It keeps everybody finishing.

Choosing books people will finish

Look for a moral argument, not just a good plot. The best book club books split the room: someone made a questionable decision and half the group defends it. Mixed genre months keep it fresh, and a shorter book after a heavy one keeps the numbers up.

Questions that beat "did you like it?"

• Who did you side with, and when did that change?
• What would you have done differently in their position?
• Which character would you not want to be friends with?
• What did the ending owe us that it did not deliver?
• Would you recommend it, and to whom specifically?

The unglamorous logistics

Start with tea and twenty minutes of chat, then the book, then the pick for next time before anyone leaves. Someone always has not finished it — let them stay, tell them the spoiler risk up front, and move on.
