• Short chapters — three to five pages, each ending on a small hook.
• A domestic setting — a house, a job, a marriage. Nothing procedural.
• An unreliable narrator you half trust.
• A mid-book twist that reframes everything before it.
• Plain, fast prose that never slows you down.

When you search for your next read, search for those five things rather than a genre label.

How to spot one in a shop

Open to a random page. If there is a lot of white space and short paragraphs, it will read fast. If the chapter you land on is six pages of scene-setting, it will not scratch the itch.

Check the chapter count against the page count. Forty-plus chapters in a 350-page book is a very good sign.

Domestic thriller vs psychological thriller

Domestic thrillers keep the danger inside the home and the cast small. Psychological thrillers can be broader and slower, and often care more about why than what happens next. If you want the McFadden pace, stay domestic.

A tip for bingers

These books are addictive and they blur. Read two, then read something completely different — a romance or a fantasy — before the third. The twists land far harder when you have not just seen the trick performed.
