The book that started it all, and honestly it is the most restrained of the series. A salt mine, a royal competition, a glass castle with something rotten under the floor.

Celaena is a joy here — vain, funny, obsessed with sweets and dresses and libraries in a way that makes her feel like a real teenage girl rather than a killing machine. The Dorian and Chaol dynamic is doing a lot of heavy lifting, and Nehemia is the beating heart of the whole thing.

It reads younger than what comes later, and the mystery resolves a little neatly. Four stars because it is a very good fantasy debut that happens to be the smallest room in a very large house.
