What works so well is how small the stakes feel at first. A job in the Red Desert, a betrayal in Skull's Bay, a friendship that reads like the first honest thing in her life. By the final page you understand exactly why the girl who walks into Endovier is not the girl who walked out of Rifthold.

Read it before Throne of Glass if you want the emotional context, or after if you want to be ruined retroactively. Either way, do not skip it.
