# Crown of Midnight

## At a glance

- Series: Throne of Glass
- Genre: Fantasy

> The one where the series stops being a competition and starts being a war.

Crown of Midnight is where the tone shifts. Celaena is the King's Champion now, faking deaths and hating herself for it, and the book is much darker for it.

The middle section is genuinely tense, and the romance finally gets room to breathe before it is taken apart. Maas is very good at giving you exactly the thing you asked for and then charging you for it.

The last fifty pages reframe everything you thought you knew about the first book. Four stars, and the only reason it is not five is that the pacing sags slightly in the middle before the reveal.
