# What to Read Next, Based on Your Mood

Nine reading moods and the kind of book that satisfies each one — a better way to choose than genre alone.

Category: Recommendations

Genre tells you what a book contains. Mood tells you whether you will actually finish it. Find yours below.

## I want to be wrecked

Literary-leaning contemporary or a romance with grief at its centre. Clear the evening and keep tissues nearby.

## I want to be distracted

A domestic thriller with short chapters. Nothing that requires you to remember eleven character names.

## I want to be swept away

Romantasy. Big world, high stakes, a slow burn that takes 400 pages to arrive. This is the mood that makes people read a five-book series in a fortnight.

## I want to feel safe

A comfort reread or a cosy mystery. You already know how it ends, and that is the point.

## I want to laugh

Banter-heavy romance — sports romance, roommates, workplace enemies. Low angst by design.

## I want to be scared, but only slightly

Gothic or a slow-building suspense novel. Atmosphere over gore.

## I want to learn something

Narrative non-fiction — true stories told with a novelist''s pacing. Far easier to finish than a textbook.

## I want something short

Under 300 pages, standalone, one point of view. Finishing a book in two evenings resets everything.

## I do not know what I want

This is the most common answer, and the hardest to shop for. It is why [blind date with a book](/packages) starts with mood rather than title: you say how you want to feel and what you never want to read again, and the choice stops being yours.

Browse by genre and rating on [the shelf](/bookshelf), or read [the reviews](/reviews) if you would like to know exactly what you are getting into first.
