# How to Choose Your Next Book (When You Own 40 Unread Ones)

A five-minute method for picking your next read from an overflowing TBR, without doom-scrolling three apps first.

Category: Guides

The hardest part of reading is not reading. It is standing in front of a shelf at half nine at night deciding which of forty books you are allowed to want.

Here is the method I actually use.

## 1. Name the mood, not the book

Do not ask "what should I read?". Ask "what do I want to feel?" Comforted, wrecked, gripped, distracted, warm. Mood narrows forty books to about six in seconds.

## 2. Pick the opposite of your last read

Just finished a 700-page fantasy? Read a 300-page thriller. The fastest route into a slump is three doorstoppers in a row.

## 3. The five-page rule

Take three candidates. Read five pages of each, standing up. One of them will make you sit down. That is your book.

## 4. Check your actual life

A tense psychological thriller is a bad idea the week of a house move. Match the book to the week you are having, not the reader you wish you were.

## 5. Give yourself permission to stop

Choosing gets easier once quitting is allowed. A book you abandon at page sixty is not a failure, it is a shortlist that did its job.

## If you would rather not choose at all

Some nights the whole point is not deciding. That is exactly why [blind date with a book](/packages) exists — you tell me the moods and tropes you love and what to avoid, and the book arrives wrapped, no decision required.

If you would rather see the options first, everything I have read and rated is on [the shelf](/bookshelf), sorted by genre and by author.
