Enemies to lovers is the most searched romance trope in Ireland, and it's the one readers are pickiest about. Get it right and it's unbeatable. Get it wrong and it's two people being mildly rude for 300 pages.

## What actually makes it work

A proper enemies to lovers arc needs four beats:

1. **A real reason to hate each other** — a betrayal, opposing sides, competing goals. Not "he was mean at a party".
2. **Forced proximity** — a mission, a rivalry, a shared house, a war.
3. **A moment of protection** — one of them chooses the other before they're ready to admit it.
4. **A cost** — the reconciliation has to take something from somebody.

If a book skips step one or four, it's bickering-to-lovers. Fun, but not the same.
