# Dark Romance Books: A Beginner's Guide (and Where to Start Safely)

What dark romance actually is, how it differs from spicy romance, how to read content warnings properly, and five dark romance books to start with.

Dark romance is one of the fastest-growing searches among Irish readers, and also the one people are shyest about asking. So let's be plain about what it is and how to start without landing somewhere you didn't want to be.

## What dark romance actually means

Dark romance is romance where the conflict comes from morally grey or outright dangerous characters, and the story doesn't soften them. It is not just "spicy". Plenty of spicy romance is sunny, and plenty of dark romance is closed-door. The dark part is the ethics, not the heat.

## How to read content warnings properly

1. Check the author's note at the front — most dark romance authors list warnings themselves.
2. Cross-check the content notes in my [review](/reviews) of the book, where I flag anything I think readers should know.
3. Decide your own hard nos in advance and stick to them. "I'll skim it" rarely works.
4. It is completely fine to DNF. Nobody gets a medal.

## Five places to start

1. **Twisted Love — Ana Huang.** The gateway. Grumpy, protective, more angst than menace.
2. **Haunting Adeline — H.D. Carlton.** Much heavier. Read the warnings twice before you start.
3. **Credence — Penelope Douglas.** Isolated setting, intense dynamics.
4. **Butcher & Blackbird — Brynne Weaver.** Dark with real humour, which makes it far easier to enter.
5. **Verity — Colleen Hoover.** Technically thriller, but the same unease if you want a toe in the water.
