# A Cosy Autumn Reading List for Dark Evenings

What to read when the evenings close in — the moods, genres and pairings that make autumn the best reading season of the year.

Autumn is the only season that comes with a built-in reading schedule. It gets dark at five, it rains sideways, and nobody expects you to be outside.

## The autumn moods

**Windswept and gothic.** Old houses, unreliable narrators, secrets in the attic. Read these on a Sunday afternoon while the heating comes on.

**Academic.** Anything set in a university in October. Libraries, obsessive friendships, someone taking Greek far too seriously.

**Cosy mystery.** Small town, low body count, cake described in loving detail. The reading equivalent of a blanket.

**Slow-burn fantasy.** Long, cold, immersive. Autumn is when you finally start the series you have been circling all year.

**Comfort romance.** Small-town, second-chance, snowed-in. The pre-Christmas run-up needs no justification.

## How to build the list

Alternate heavy and light. One gothic, one romance. One 600-page fantasy, one 280-page mystery. It keeps the pace up when the clocks go back and everything feels slower.

Pick five books, not fifteen. A short list you finish beats a beautiful list you abandon in November.

## The rituals matter as much as the books

A lamp instead of the big light. A blanket on the arm of the chair. Something warm within reach. It sounds twee, and it works — the ritual is what tells your brain it is reading time rather than scrolling time.
