# The Best Thriller Books to Read in Ireland Right Now

The best thriller books for Irish readers in 2026 — psychological thrillers, domestic suspense and one-sitting page-turners, with honest notes from my own shelf.

Category: Guides

"Best thriller books" is one of the most searched bookish phrases in Ireland every single month, and I get why: a good thriller is the fastest cure for a reading slump. Below are the thrillers I keep pressing into people's hands, sorted by the kind of scare you're in the mood for.

## Start here if you want one-sitting suspense

| Book | Why it works | Read it if you liked |
|---|---|---|
| *The Housemaid* — Freida McFadden | Short chapters, a twist you feel in your stomach | *The Girl on the Train* |
| *The Silent Patient* — Alex Michaelides | A single locked-room question you can't put down | *Gone Girl* |
| *Verity* — Colleen Hoover | Romance readers' gateway thriller | *The Housemaid* |

You'll find my full write-ups over on the [book reviews](/reviews) page, and every thriller I own is standing on the thriller shelf of my [virtual bookshelf](/bookshelf).

## Psychological thrillers vs domestic suspense

Psychological thrillers live inside somebody's head — unreliable narrators, memory gaps, a slow realisation. Domestic suspense keeps the danger in the kitchen: marriages, neighbours, nannies, group chats. Freida McFadden writes the second kind better than almost anyone, which is why her books are the ones that fly off my shelf. Her books in order are laid out on the [Freida McFadden reading order](/reading-order/freida-mcfadden) page.

## How I pick a thriller

1. **Chapter length.** Under six pages and I'll read "one more" until 2am.
2. **A question, not a body count.** The best thrillers ask *what really happened* rather than *who dies next*.
3. **An ending that re-reads the book for you.** If I want to flick back to chapter three, it worked.

## Thrillers that make brilliant gifts

Thrillers are the easiest genre to gift because the hook fits on a card. If you're buying for someone who says they "don't really read", a twisty thriller in a [blind date with a book](/packages/blind-date) parcel almost always converts them. Everything is wrapped by hand here and posted with [An Post](https://www.anpost.ie/), so Dublin and Cork orders usually land in a day or two — see [delivery to Dublin](/delivery/dublin) for timings.

## Where to track what you read

I post the shortest possible verdicts on [Instagram](https://www.instagram.com/bellabugsbooks/) and keep longer notes on the [book reviews](/reviews) page. If you want a challenge, the [reading bingo card](/bingo) has a "read a thriller in one sitting" square with your name on it.

## My honest ranking

If you only read three thrillers this year, make them *The Housemaid*, *The Silent Patient* and *Verity* — in that order. Then come back for the sequels, because you will.
